Another world

There is world besides demonstrations and sieges in Dhaka and we do our utmost to enjoy it. Here are some photos from two different ‘cultural’ trips that I went on recently. The first two were taken at the DRIC gallery in Dhamondi, where we went to the exhibition entitled boundaries. Although these two posters were not part of the exhibition, which was very enjoyable in itself, they made me smile. The gallery trip also included a stop at Coffee World for a cappuccino and waffles with maple syrup – oh we do give ourselves little treats!
The second photo is from Friday the 1st of December. Important date as it marks the beginning of Advent and the lead up to Christmas and we are all hoping that this month will bring with it more positive tidings in this city of ours. Myself, Anna, Nina and Vic decided to check out the jewellery exhibition that the Radisson hotel had advertised earlier that week. Upon arriving in the five star hotel we were guided towards the ‘exhibition’ which to our dismay consisted of one table! To add to our disappointment the prices of the jewellery were a little beyond the pockets of a group of volunteers and NGO employees. All was not lost though as we discovered the little coffee shop and the wonderful seating area next to the swimming pool. We enjoyed delicious tea, sandwiches and pastries while we absorbed our luxurious surroundings – what a different world lay just outside the barred gates. But that is Dhaka for you: a world of contradictions and extremes.
