It’s the middle of September and the Monsoon season here in Bangladesh should be coming to an end, but as many have said September can be the worst! I didn’t believe them until earlier this week when it started to rain Sunday afternoon and rained almost constantly (the odd kind two minute break to allow rapid travel) till Tuesday night. The most amazing storm took place on Monday morning which started at 4.30am and lasted all day. The thunder and lightening had me jumping at my desk at home and many people were unable to make the journey to work (including myself). Unfortunately this rain is also the cause of much hardship in this low lying flood prone country. Many of you may be aware of the millions of Bangladeshis who lose their homes every year as a result of flooding. BBC yesterday starting running a short piece on the situation in Bangladesh in an effort to raise awareness in the developed countries of the West where too little too late is being done to stop global warming. I have included some pictures of the stormy skies on Monday. Please note that these pictures were taken at around lunchtime so it gives you an idea of how dark the skies were.
On a lighter note, I want to extend my congratulations to my friend Syed who got married two weeks ago. Well the official celebrations will not be until December but he is a married man. I hope he and Sriti (means memory in Bangla) will be very happy together. Here you can see Syed and Sriti enjoying an evening of jazz; well actually 3 songs and a meal by candle light as Spaghetti Jazz suffered two power cuts – time to invest in a generator.
